my name is mikaela (she/her)
i'm a restaurateur and photographer based in hobart, Tasmania/lutruwita

my 9 to 5 looks a little more like 5 to 9 (and then some).

i first picked up a camera as a way of documenting my travels - i’ve been lucky to visit about one quarter of all the countries in the world; most often on a shoestring, rich in experience. somewhere along the way i left my heart in the Pacific ocean, my head came home to school and i graduated with a bachelor of Psychology. with this degree and my creative passions under my belt, i took the career plunge into… hospitality! (surprise, Ma).

in 2020 dana was born, which is the perfect melting pot of culture, community, and wine (lots of wine. litres of tequila). this role has taught me so much, particularly how to read a room—create meaning—tailor an experience.

people won’t remember what you said, but they’ll remember how you made them feel’.

relative to photography, i think there’s something special about the smaller, seemingly mundane details and their ability to transport you back to a moment, or a feeling, years later. i like to tell stories, listen to other people’s stories, and photography encapsulates all of this for me.
i love to shoot in a photojournalistic or ‘documentary’ style; capturing the natural, candid moments as they unfold.
i’m inspired by old-school film photography and endeavour to stylise stills in a way that feels nostalgic now, yet timeless in years to come.

a glass of wine - red, white, sparkly, skinsy, natty
deja vu - beyonce
cinema
watching the surf
these are a few of my favourite things.

photography is not my 9 to 5 but i’m passionate about lurve, the non-traditional, and the little things, and the big-life-moments, and small business, and i’d love to help capture all the wonderful details in yours.
